Higher education can be divided into 3 main levels:
1. Bachelor’s Degree – this is the base university qualification for people who haven’t graduated from a university before. On successful completion you will obtain the knowledge, skills and attitude that will allow you to make tangible contributions and face new challenges in the chosen discipline. The duration is usually 3 to 4 years depending on the discipline.
2. Master’s Degree – people who have a bachelor’s degree, and who wish to get a deeper understanding of their field of study, can pursue a Master’s degree. On completion, one becomes a graduate in their chosen discipline making his/her job prospects better. Duration varies from 1 year to 2 years depending on the course and university.
3. The Doctoral Degree – It is the highest level of academic degree. People generally choose to pursue a doctorate degree after completing their Master’s but you can also enrol after a Bachelor degree under certain conditions. Typically a doctorate degree is pursued by people who want to carry out extensive research in their field of choice. The duration ranges from 3 to 5 years depending on your previous qualification and dedication.
Enrolments for higher education courses usually happen 2 to 3 times a year. The recently introduced ‘Postgraduate work visa’ offers a great opportunity for people interested to stay and study for a longer term in Australia.
The fees range between 5000 and 25000 AUD per semester.
The Higher Education Sector visa (subclass 573) is required if you want to study a full-time higher education course.
